Vascular calcifications are the consequence of several pathological conditions such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia and chronic renal insufficiency. They are associated with risks of amputation, ischemic heart disease, stroke and increased mortality. A growing body of evidence indicates that vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) undergo chondrogenic commitment eventually leading to vascular calcification, by mechanisms similar to those governing ossification in the cartilage growth plate. Our knowledge of the formation of cartilage growth plate can therefore help us to understand why and (...)

The development and use of nanotechnology in the food industry have grown steadily. While visions for nanofood suggest that the applications will improve quality and safety, they are also controversial for several reasons including potential health risks coupled with difficulty in assessing low-dosage nanoparticle risks as well as values-based objections. In recent years, debate over nanofoods has sparked inquiry into factors that predict public attitudes and purchase intentions. Such studies have investigated the roles of demographics and sociographics, value predispositions toward (...)

Eyeblink conditioning, motor control, and the analysis of limbic-cerebellar interactions.Craig Weiss & John F. Disterhoft - 1996 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 19 (3):479-481.
Several target articles in this BBS special issue address the topic of cerebellar and olivary functions, especially as they pertain to motor earning. Another important topic is the neural interaction between the limbic system and the cerebellum during associative learning. In this commentary we present some of our data on olivo-cerebellar and limbic-cerebellar interactions during eyeblink conditioning. [HOUK et al.; SIMPSON et al.; THACH].

Under the balmy Mediterranean skies of Santa Margherita Ligure on the beautiful Italian Riviera, forty Hegelian scholars from nine countries put their heads together on the theme “Hegel’s Philosophie des subjectiven Geistes” at the Conference of the Internationale Hegel-Vereinigung, May 24–27, 1973. Enjoying the generosity of the Italian Government and the official hospitality of the Municipality of Santa Margherita, the participants heard and discussed four papers by German scholars, two each by Italians and Americans, and one each by a Dutch (...)

    The Epistemology of Paul Weiss.Marc F. Griesbach - 1972 - Review of Metaphysics 25 (Supplement):25 - 39.
It may be that Kant manifested a profound understanding of modern empirical science in his observation that we have now placed nature on the witness stand and are compelling her to answer the questions we think fit to propose. This, I am convinced, is not the approach best suited to bring out the deepest insights and systematic teachings of another philosopher. On the contrary, it would seem that one can make sense out of another man's thought only by coming to (...)

    Political Science and the Modern Mind. [REVIEW]F. G. A. - 1964 - Review of Metaphysics 17 (4):639-639.
Contains three lectures on vaguely related topics. John Cogley outlines the sources of religious conflict in the United States. Holding that the First Amendment was intended not to discourage religion but to promote religious liberty, he develops principles for the solution of problems of Church-State relations. Paul Weiss discusses the more theoretical problem of the relationship of natural and supernatural law. Natural law derives from a common good relative to a particular group, and is strictly utilitarian. Reference to a (...)

    Consistency and independence in postulational technique.Arnold F. Emch - 1936 - Philosophy of Science 3 (2):185-196.
Despite the skepticism of many mathematicians and logicians as to the possibility of any test which will show conclusively the consistency or independence of the members of a postulate set, several methods have nevertheless been devised and employed, e.g., the empirical methods of Russell and Huntington, the internal method of Hilbert, and the reflective method of Royce. However, with the possible exception of Hilbert's method, these techniques require us to forsake the purely formal or abstract mode of analysis, and instead (...)

Five essays on various aspects of Peirce's philosophy, first delivered as a series of lectures at Yale University, plus a brief biography of Peirce by Paul Weiss. The essays are: "Charles S. Peirce as an American," by Rulon Wells, "Notes Toward a Logic of Discovery," by N. R. Hanson, "Action, Conduct, and Self-Control," by R. J. Bernstein, "Community and Reality," by J. E. Smith, and "Charles S. Peirce, Philosopher," by Paul Weiss. Several of these essays contain concise, perceptive (...)

    Beyond All Appearances. [REVIEW]F. R. G. - 1975 - Review of Metaphysics 28 (3):570-571.
In this work, Weiss presents his latest views on the fundamental questions of being and knowing which have concerned him throughout his career. He seems to have accepted his own challenge "... that were I to take advantage of what is said in Philosophy In Process and revise the Modes of Being, the result, in effect, would be a new philosophic ‘Aristotelianized’ account." Here, "Aristotelian" refers to any systematic attempt to give categories to "map the universe." This is, in (...)

    Mythe AlS interpretatie.R. F. Beerling - 1971 - Tijdschrift Voor Filosofie 33 (3):519 - 534.

This brief, well-written book expands Weiss’ philosophy of art to include the making of films, and in doing so helps one to better understand much of his philosophy as a whole. For example, the shift from Modes of Being to Beyond All Appearances can partly be understood as the fuller appreciation of what actualities are that has followed from Weiss’ further reflections on the status of art objects. The book presents an argument which is shaped by an exemplary (...)
